Nippers Program 2017/18
The Nippers Committee has been busy over winter planning another great program and we are all looking forward to seeing many familiar faces as well as some new ones.
Our newsletter and website are the main way we communicate with our Nippers families. Between now and summer you will receive several newsletters. In case you are not receiving the newsletter please email email@example.com to request to be put on the mailing list.
Please take the time to read the following information carefully as it outlines some changes to this season’s program and outlines how and when you can enrol.
This year enrolment will be a 3 step process
- Obtain or update your Working With Children Check & make sure it’s registered with Woolamai Beach SLSC and Life Saving Victoria
(do it now)
- Enrol in Nippers via our website
(do it from 7pm Friday 13 October 2017)
- Create your family profile via the Life Saving Victoria website (do it by 3 November 2017)
We also need your help – we have some roles which must be filled before we can go ahead with this season’s program.

Last season over 400 children between the ages of 6-13 participated in the Woolamai Beach SLSC Nippers program.
This year’s program will run for 7 days commencing on:
Friday 29 December 2017 and concluding on Friday 5 January 2018. New Year’s Day will be a rest day.
The program will be held between 9.30am-11.30am each day.
The majority of the program will be conducted at Woolamai Waters, end of Cottosloe Avenue, Cape Woolamai – Melways 634 D12.
The final day of the program will be held at the Woolamai Beach Surf Beach.
The fee to enrol in the Nippers program is $95 per child.
A high visibility rash vest also is required and can be purchased for $45. (If you have a vest from last year you can use this).
Club membership fees must be paid via the Life Saving Victoria website and are $30 per child and $30 per parent/couple for social membership.
You cannot enrol your child in Nippers unless one parent has a Working With Children Check.
Please note that it will not be possible to enrol in the program unless at least one parent holds a current Working With Children Check which is registered with Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club. This must be obtained prior to enrolment.
All adults who are members of a surf life saving club must hold a Working With Children Check to comply with Life Saving Victoria policy. There are no exceptions for the requirement to obtain a WWCC (even professions such as police and teachers must obtain a WWCC).
Applying for a WWCC is free. Details of how to apply can be found on the this website.
If you don’t already have a WWCC apply now as it can take several weeks for the Department of Justice to process.
Nipper enrolments open from 7pm on Friday 13 October 2017

Enrolments for the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club Nippers program will commence from 13 October at 7pm.
Enrolments close once all places in the program have been filled. Last season all places were filled in 2 days, so please enrol early to avoid disappointment. Anyone who misses a place in the program is welcome to join our waiting list.
Each family joining the program will also be required to join Life Saving Victoria’s online membership portal
This season we will be asking all parents to set up their own family membership profile on the Life Saving Victoria online membership portal. This portal feeds information into a membership database known as Surfguard.
Surfguard is a membership database operated by Surf Life Saving Australia which enables the creation and maintenance of records for surf life saving clubs and their members throughout Australia.
Family membership profiles include parent’s contact details, Working With Children Check details and whether the parent has any life saving qualifications. Children’s details are also entered into the membership portal.
The Woolamai Beach SLSC will then add additional information such as for awards gained (e.g Nippers certificates), record of swimming proficiency and competition qualifications.
In previous seasons the Club has entered family profile information into Surfguard however this has created a significant administrative burden and has led to not all information being accurate. Most other Nippers programs in Victoria are now asking families to create their own family membership profiles.
Over the coming months we will be placing instructions on how to do this on our website. We are expecting most people will create their family profiles after they have enrolled in the program however a family membership profile can be created any time between now and the end of November.
If you have not created your family profile by 3 November your place in the program will be offered to another family and your program fee will be refunded.
This season we are continuing with default age group categories to bring the program into line with Life Saving Victoria membership and competition requirements.

*5 & 6 year old children under this age will be permitted to participate in the program if they have completed a year of primary school
Red (Under 8)
Must be 7 by 30 September 2017
Yellow (Under 9)
Must be 8 by 30 September 2017
Light Blue (Under 10)
Must be 9 by 30 September 2017
Dark Blue (Under 11)
Must be 10 by 30 September 2017
Light Green (Under 12)
Must be 11 by 30 September 2017
Dark Green (Under 13)
Must be 12 by 30 September 2017
*13 year old children will be permitted to participate in Dark Green
We are aware that for children born between 1 October and 31 December this may mean that your child repeats an age group or is separated from other children whom they have been grouped with in previous seasons. For this reason we are prepared to make exceptions by request. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like your child to remain in a particular age group.
The program doesn’t run itself. It is run by parents of participants. We are all volunteers.
It takes a lot of people to help run a program with over 400 children involved.
While many parents help out on the beach, we need lots of help before the season even starts. Most can be done from home and in your own time.
Specific roles available this season include:
- Sponsorship co-ordinator
- Newsletter/website co-ordinator
- Equipment co-ordinator
Carrying out one of these roles is very rewarding and can be lots of fun. You can even share the role with friends. Training and assistance will be provided.
If the above positions are not filled we cannot deliver the program.
